The first images from Emma Stone‘s upcoming film Poor Things have arrived, and the Cruella star is almost unrecognisable in her new look.
The Frankenstein retelling, based on Alasdair Gray’s novel, stars Stone as Bella Baxter, a young woman who has been brought back from the dead by unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Spider-Man star Willem Dafoe).
Stone’s character, originally named Victoria Blessington, drowned herself to escape her abusive husband.
The doctor brings her back to life by replacing her brain with that of the foetus she was carrying at the time, giving her the mental faculties of a child and renaming her Bella.
Bella, eager to learn more about the world around her, embarks on a whirlwind adventure across continents with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Marvel’s Mark Ruffalo) in search of the worldliness she craves.
Bella, free of the prejudices of the time, becomes more committed to her beliefs in equality and liberation.
The images show Stone’s character with long jet-black hair as she explores the wilderness and boards a ship. In a black and white image, Dafoe’s Dr. Godwin can also be seen seated in what appears to be a laboratory.
Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and Christopher Abbott round out the main cast, which is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and produced by Tony McNamara.
Stone and Lanthimos will co-produce with Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.
They previously collaborated on the Oscar-winning film The Favourite. The actress co-starred in the 2018 period drama with Olivia Colman, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Stone was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the film, as well as Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director.
The film Poor Things will be released in theatres on September 8.
