Gigi Hadid and her other supermodel half, Bella, celebrated Bella’s 26th birthday last night in New York City. While the birthday girl wore an all-black ensemble for the occasion, Gigi went for a more statement look. She opted for an unexpected fall skirt that harkens back to the early 2000s. (Hint: It’s something your middle school art teacher might have worn back then.)
The throwback item in question was a vintage Roberto Cavalli floor-length denim and silk maxi skirt. The slightly bohemian piece had a major moment in the early 2000s, thanks in part to Britney Spears’ performance at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Hadid’s skirt was partially bleached to give it a new look, and it had a swishy silk hemline that instantly made it feel more modern (not to mention more lightweight than a fully-covered denim style). It also helped that she styled it with a cropped turtleneck and a polished leather blazer.
So, will the denim maxi have a moment in 2022? Given that Bella wore one last year, it’s safe to say the trend is gaining traction. Long jean skirts were seen on the spring 2023 runways at Diesel, Altuzarra, and Luar. If you like the look, remember to do what Gigi did and pair the denim maxi with sexier, sleeker pieces on top.
