Lil Baby has made significant contributions to the hip-hop scene in a relatively short period of time. But he has also made significant contributions to the Atlanta community, for which he just received recognition.
Lil Baby, whose true name is Dominique Armani Jones, was presented with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition’s benefit event, the 2nd annual Music in Action Awards Gala. The honoree receives it in recognition of their work to advance social and racial justice.
The prize was given to the “Drip too Hard” artist in recognition of his numerous civic initiatives in Atlanta. Together with Goodr, he hosted his yearly “Back to School Fest” at Atlanta’s West End Mall. The celebration, which featured music, games, food, and even carnival rides, drew more than 3,000 students from nearby schools. Additionally, attendees received haircuts, school supplies, and backpacks. Along with creating the $150,000 “My Turn” scholarship programme, he collaborated with Atlanta restaurateur Lemont Bradley to offer 100 employment to young adults in the city. This programme is intended to help kids at his former high school.
“I honestly didn’t know what a humanitarian was, but as I looked into it and started reading, I understand that I’m genuinely humanitarian,” Lil Baby said after winning the prize during the ceremony. “I just want to say that I appreciate everyone in here,” he continued, “because nothing that we are attempting to accomplish can be accomplished by just one person. To stick together and stay together, we must all work together.
The artist shared a photo of himself on Instagram with the comment, “Thank You To The @bma coalition For Honoring Me With The @quincyjones Humanitarian Award! #universityofthehood,” standing in his driveway while wearing a black tie for the event.
