Last week, a star-studded soundtrack for the Greta Gerwig-directed film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who will also appear on the album) was announced, featuring tracks by Lizzo, HAIM, Charli XCX, Tame Impala, and others.
Lipa then released ‘Dance The Night,’ the soundtrack’s lead single written in collaboration with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
“It all started with a DM,” Ronson wrote on Instagram on Friday (May 26). “I’m overjoyed that our song from this incredible film is finally available today.”
Ronson wrote in a screenshot of his message to Lipa, “Hey! I’m writing songs for the Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.”
“It’s directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Ladybird), and the script is possibly the funniest I’ve ever read, like [redacted] funny… There’s a song with a massive 60-person dance number involving the entire cast.”
“I only have the track so far because rehearsals have begun,” he continued, “but I would fucking love it if you would consider co-writing and starring on it.” “I honestly believe the film will be fantastic.”
The musician and producer concluded his message by offering to “send u a little vid of them all rehearsing so you can see the scope of it all” if she was interested.
The new song was released last week with a Barbie-inspired music video that included a cameo from writer, director, and executive producer Greta Gerwig.
The ‘Levitating’ singer also debuted several pieces from her new ‘La Vacanza’ clothing collection, created in collaboration with fashion icon Donatella Versace.
Lipa not only provides the lead single, but she also appears in the film as a mermaid version of Barbie.
A third trailer for the film was released last week, providing some context for the plot, which appears to revolve around Barbie’s awakening to the imperfections of life before she ventures into the real world with Ken.
